Gruhapravesam and House-Shifting Muhurat — How to Choose Your Date

Most families in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh fix the gruhapravesam or shifting muhurat first, then look for a mover — so getting the date right matters before anything else. The short version: consult a Telugu panchangam or your family purohit for the exact ghadiya, aim for the months tradition favours, avoid the months it does not, and book your mover as soon as the date is set, because the good dates fill fast.

Which months are good for gruhapravesam as per the Telugu calendar?

In the Telugu tradition the favourable months for a house entry are generally Magha, Phalguna, Vaisakha and Jyeshtha, with parts of Kartika also considered auspicious. These fall roughly between late winter and early summer, and again briefly after the monsoon. The exact tithi, nakshatra and lagna still need to be checked against a panchangam for your specific date — the month is a guide, not the whole answer.

Which months should be avoided for house shifting?

Tradition avoids Shravana, Bhadrapada and Ashwina — broadly the monsoon and immediate post-monsoon period, roughly July to October — for gruhapravesam. This lines up with the practical reality that monsoon moves are harder anyway. Ashadha and the Dakshinayana period are also generally treated as less favourable for a new-house entry.

Is Ugadi a good day for gruhapravesam?

Yes — Ugadi, the Telugu New Year, is an Abhuja Muhurtham, meaning the entire day is auspicious and needs no separate muhurat calculation. That makes it one of the single most popular days of the year for a house entry across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, so it is also the most heavily booked. Ugadi falls on 19 March in 2026 and on 7 April in 2027 — the date shifts by about three weeks between years because it follows the lunar calendar, so plan against the Telugu calendar, not a fixed Gregorian date.

How does the school calendar affect when to shift?

For families with school-age children, the summer vacation is the real constraint. Telangana and Andhra Pradesh schools closed on 24 April 2026 and reopen on 12 June 2026, and almost all family moves happen inside that window, with a hard deadline of about 10 June — nobody wants to be unpacking when school restarts. The last two weeks of May are the busiest, so if your muhurat falls then, book several weeks ahead.

We do not calculate muhurats — that is your purohit's work, and a Telugu panchangam gives the exact ghadiya. What we do is hold your date once it is fixed, and plan the loading time so the vehicle can leave in the auspicious window.

What should be ready before the gruhapravesam?

  • The muhurat date and time, confirmed with your purohit
  • The mover booked, with the loading time agreed to suit the muhurat
  • Milk, water and the items traditionally carried in first kept aside, not packed into the general cartons
  • The kitchen and pooja items packed and labelled separately so they can be unpacked first at the new house
  • Utilities — electricity, gas and water — arranged at the new address before the entry

FAQ

Questions people ask before booking

Can you shift on the same day as the gruhapravesam?

Yes, and it is common. We load early in the morning so the goods reach the new house in time for the muhurat, or we deliver the previous evening and keep everything ready to place after the ceremony. Tell us your muhurat time when you book and we plan the loading around it.

Do you work on Ugadi and other festival days?

Yes. Ugadi is one of our busiest days precisely because it is an Abhuja Muhurtham, so book as early as you can — good crews and vehicles are committed weeks ahead for that date.

Which is the cheapest time to shift if the muhurat is flexible?

If your date can flex, the quieter months — roughly January to February and the monsoon weeks of July to September — are less congested and easier to book at short notice. The peak is late April to early June, driven by the school vacation, when capacity is the constraint.
