Planning your move
House Shifting Checklist — A Week-by-Week Plan
Start about four weeks out: book the survey and fix the date, then work backwards — declutter and sort in week three, arrange utility transfers in week two, and pack the essentials box last. The single most useful habit is to label every carton by room and to keep a separate box of things you will need on the first night, so you are not opening ten boxes looking for a phone charger.
Four weeks before: fix the date and the mover
- Book a free survey and get the quote fixed in writing
- Confirm the muhurat or moving date and share it with the mover
- Decide what is going, what is being sold or given away, and what is being discarded
- Tell your landlord or society, and check any lift-booking or gate-pass rules at both ends
Two weeks before: transfer utilities and address
This is the part people forget until the last day. Arrange the electricity connection at the new address (TGSPDCL in Telangana, APEPDCL or APSPDCL in Andhra Pradesh), transfer or book the LPG gas connection to the new address with your distributor, and update your address on Aadhaar and on any bank and delivery accounts. Doing this two weeks out means the new home has power and gas from day one.
One week before: pack down
- Let the crew pack the breakables and furniture — that is what the packing service is for, and it is where insurance-worthy damage is avoided
- Pack a separate 'first night' box: bedding, a change of clothes, chargers, medicines, basic kitchen items and documents
- Keep valuables, cash and key documents with you, not in the load
- Defrost the fridge and empty and dry the washing machine a day ahead
On moving day
- Do a final walk-through of every room, cupboard and loft before the vehicle leaves
- Check the inventory against what is loaded
- Keep the balance payment ready for delivery, not before
- Carry the essentials box and valuables in your own vehicle
